On Becoming An Uncle…

At some point in the late afternoon/early evening yesterday (details are sketchy, as there were only a few thousand in attendance), Elsie James Bridgers (8 lbs. - 21 inches) and Lee Tucker Bridgers (5lbs 7 oz. - 19 inches) came on to the scene like gangbusters.

Tuck and EJ

Just like their mother, The Little Sister, they were fashionably late. Elsie James, having the height, weight, and reach advantages on her younger brother, was able to knock him around a little, popping him on the forehead on the way out of their temporary abode.

Tuck, EJ, and I

As their uncle, I feel as if it’s my duty to corrupt them early and often, and I’ll begin doing just that next weekend, when I roll into Oxford, by buying them their first beers and tobacco products. They’ll be over a week old by that point, almost two weeks, really, and with them being new to this whole, well, living thing, I figure they’ll be inundated with quite a bit of new information, so I need to get into their heads as early as possible. Besides, being born southern (BY THE GRACE OF GOD!), they’ll be into the hooch at an early age anyways. It’s just how we roll.

I’ve been prepping myself for The Niece and The Nephew’s arrival for a few weeks now by intentionally placing myself in baby rich environments. The Girl and I went to a christening last weekend for Doughnut, the youngest addition to our family of friends. And earlier in the week we attended a birthday party for Moo, the three year old daughter of another couple in our circle of friends. Granted, she was the only toddler at the party, and beer was served along with cake and ice cream (calm down folks, she had a real party with other little children, too), but it’s a start.

Life is moving on at a lightning bug-quick pace, with friends (I know a surprise!) and family, getting pregnant and starting new lives, and all of the other what-nots. But what’s shocking to me isn’t all of the change. What’s shocking to me is how strangely comfortable I am with it all.
